Scale has long been manipulated in every direction by artists who want to confront us with new ways of perceiving our environment. Size is something which can be easily altered to a minor degree and yet result in a major reaction. Florentijn Hofman's solo show at Galerie West in The Hague, Netherlands, is entitled Dushi. The artist created gigantic stuffed animals, made of inflatable PVC, to force the viewer to reconsider their feelings and functions. His exhibition brings together more than a dozen works which resemble stuffed children's toys on a perversely grand scale. It is one thing to play with a stuffed toy monkey, but how would you address the same object if its scale were foreboding, perhaps even physically threatening? The artist says this "œchange of scale completely changes their functionand feeling."
